Profile Inversion and Closed Form Formulation of Compact GRIN Lenses

New formulas for the design of cylindrical Graded-Index (GRIN) lens-antennas with integrated feeder are presented. The possibility integrating within lens makes system more compact, avoids complex mechanical and alignment errors. is characterized in analytical form by Geometrical Optics (GO). expression radially varying refractive index derived applying conservation momentum inside imposing parallel rays at output interface. mathematical procedure to retrieve based on inversion a truncated Abel transform. Poynting vector aperture energy each elementary ray-tube. By approximating Gaussian function total efficiency lens-antenna closed form, allowing quick design. proposed formulation has been successfully validated using ray-tracing full-wave simulations. Finally, we present examples practical GRIN lenses holes different shapes dielectric ABS/Teflon host media.
